An important message from Matthew Modine - Candidate for SAG-AFTRA President and Joely Fisher - Candidate for SAG-AFTRA Secretary-Treasurer:

We are honored to have your consideration to be the next SAG-AFTRA Leaders. We are proud of you, our fellow unionists, for caring enough to inform yourselves about the issues and making sure your voice is heard through your vote.

We recognize the need for collective oversight of our member-run union. Many members feel left behind; forced out of the comfort of a strong health plan and denied the promise of participating in profits.

We’ve been listening and we hear you.
With the election in full swing and time of the essence, we'll try to keep this brief.

First and foremost, our union members deserve experienced leaders you can trust. During this time of extraordinary industry change and growth, our members must have a President and Secretary-Treasurer with foundational knowledge of union operations and years of experience under their belts.

At this critical juncture, you deserve Leaders who are prepared, on day one, to tackle serious issues—with serious solutions; who can lead tough negotiations on your behalf; who will strive to provide safe work environments and improve the financial opportunities of all 165,000 SAG-AFTRA members.

We are those leaders.

We have dedicated years and untold hours serving on the National and Local boards and committees, working on your behalf. We have fought for you, our union family. YOU are our priority.

While we respect our opponents and their activism and appreciate their desire to serve, it doesn’t make them prepared to step into leading the Nation’s largest entertainment union. Our opponents have bragged that they can “pick it up, quick”.
This isn’t a cold read.
There’s no improv.
Our opponents - hand-picked by leaders who abandoned the chaos they created and chose not to run again - are asking you to believe they are ready… just because they say so. It is unacceptable. This is a critical undertaking that represents potential life-altering decisions made on behalf of our members.

You are being bombarded with information, slogans, emails and videos. Some campaigning tries to make you believe things that you know are untrue…For instance:

•They say the union isn’t responsible for what happened to almost 12,000 members when they lost healthcare.

Our opponents are defending the decisions of the ruling administration that claim they “had no idea” the health plan was failing and that it was the only thing the trustees could do.
A. This is simply false. The truth is they did know and they bear responsibility.
B. The very fact that they are defending horrible policy failures, proves they are not only part of the ongoing problem, but should disqualify them from running the union. Will they defend trustees if they do the same to our pension?

Membership First is currently fighting and will continue to fight to restore what was wrongfully stripped away from so many of our members and dependents.

•Current leaders are claiming responsibility for getting members work and are trying to convince you that your residuals are great! What does your bank account say?
The fact is that new streaming platforms are increasing work opportunities (contrary to their campaign literature flex, it’s not due to anything UFS/USAN did) but your compensation is going down. Yes, there is more work…but you’re making less money!

The current leaders simply have failed to stay ahead of the tech curve – just as they did with cable and dvds - through weak negotiating.

MembershipFirst wants to ensure that our members earn a living wage for that new work and we, as your leaders, will have a stronger negotiating style from which members will benefit.

•MembershipFirst is committed to supporting ALL member categories, not just a preferred group.

We are committed to continuing the important expansion of covered broadcast shops as well as organizing and expanding coverage for Background Performers, which the current regime has shamefully ignored. These initiatives are not only extraordinarily important to the health of our members, but also to our union as a whole.

The choice is yours: Our opponents who want to “learn on the job”? Or experienced, vetted candidates who are prepared, day one, to go to work for you.

We put the MEMBERSHIP FIRST and we respectfully ask for your vote.
